With a basic sound setup and wanting to add high quality digital playback and vinyl (eventually), I'm not sure where to next. It took me half an hour to just figure out what DAC is that is referred to all posts regarding digital sound. Then looking at DAC's it seems a lot of people use them for fancy earphones from mobile devices which is not my thing. My mobile is for making phone calls. Also seems like many systems have built-in DAC's, I'm guessing that includes my AV receiver...?

My current setup:
- Yamaha RX-V477 AV Receiver - https://europe.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/rx-v477/specs.html
- 2 x Boston A26 bookshelf speakers
- 1 x Klipsch R100SW Subwoofer

Current Inputs:
- Xbox One (Youtube, Spotify, Tune-in Radio, Blue Ray CD)
- PS3 (Music CD's and same as Xbox depending on mood)
- Pioneer CD/DVD player

Future Inputs:
- FLAC or other high quality digital audio
- Vinyl record player

Some newbie questions:
- Can I play FLAC files on my setup as is?
- What does one use to play FLAC files? Preferably via the AV if possible?
- If the Yamaha AV has built-in DAC's, do I need or will I benefit from an external DAC - if so, how would I connect it to the AV?
- If the AV has built-in amp, do I need an external amp?
- For vinyl, are players with built-in phono amp available in SA? (My Yamaha AV does not have phono out)

I think most of my questions could be broken up into individual posts but would be better suited to a "Newbie / Beginners" section of the forum which I could not find.

Anyone brave enough to answer any or all of above, most appreciated. Your biased opinions are also welcome :2thumbs:

UPDATE:
From the AV manual, seems I can already play some high def files like FLAC, ALAC and WAV via USB, PC or NAS.
