So, we enjoy audio - be it the music, be it the equipment needed to reproduce the music, or be it both.

Does this make us "guilty"?  And, of what?

American TV series focused on the practise of law have, over the years, drummed in the importance of these three aspects in proving "guilt":

  • Means
  • Motive
  • Opportunity

The average "audioholic" starts out somewhere along the path that is life and "gets involved in audio".

Early in life (typically before settling down to marriage, 2.4 children, 1.2 dogs and 1.6 cats) "Means" may be a bit tight (starting out = lowish income), "Motive" is present, but maybe not too strong (other distractions like chasing wenches), and "Opportunity" abounds with no responsibilities or obligations (except maybe repaying a student loan or two).

So, at this point, an entry-level audio system is acquired to be able to play music - for either all-night parties or as a prelude to seduction.

Later (once successful seduction has led to something a bit more permanent), other priorites such as setting up home, kids, etc. erode both "Means" and "Opportunity", so "Motive" is suppressed to avoid frustration, and the original entry-level system stays "unupgraded" for quite a long time.

Much later, once "Means" has grown via promotion/own business growth, "Opportunity" pops up its head and allows "Motive" to come out of hiding.

Now, a slow process starts whereby the entry-level system is replaced with something a bit more aspirational and takes on a modified role in the lifestyle - background music for dinner parties, refuge from the crap on TV and a vehicle by which to enjoy recent shifts in musical tastes brought about by the beginnings of maturity.

Even later, with kids' education completed, mortgage reduced, income more substantial, "Means" becomes more significant, "Opportunity" abounds and "Motive" is unleashed!

At this point, some significant upgrades occur and the "audioholic" is now fully-grown!

So, what's wrong with this picture?

By the time most of us reach this "audioholic" stage, we're no longer in the bloom of youth and our senses have started to wane - we wear titanium-framed multi-focal arm-extenders; our hearing now rolls off at around 14kHz; and our bladders force us to jump up more frequently than having to change sides on an LP....

In other words, by the time we have the wherewithal to own decent audio systems to really appreciate the music we've accumulated over the years, we no longer have the capability of fully enjoying it!!

So, whether or not we're actually proven guilty, we all get punished sooner or later...

:( :( :( :(
