OK, some advice please guys on a simple test I want to do in my system.

I want to compare the impact on SQ of the following:
- My pre-amp, utilizing an analogue volume control
- MY DAC, utilizing a digital volume control.

In the past I have almost always preferred analogue volume control, but this CDP/DAC's digital volume control is rather nice and worth at least auditioning in comparison to the pre-amp's. If no discernable difference can be found over the long run, I can sell the pre-amp, a set of XLR's, all funds that can routed into future speaker upgrades. Lekker. (all sources other than my CDP/music server can also be run in the digital domain, so analogue source inputs are not an issue).

To make sure I make good comparison I obviously need some gain matching or SPL matching or whatever it is called. Comparisons will be made at 3-4 typical listening levels (i.e. low level - late night, medium low level, medium, and loud).

What do I need to do:
- SPL Meter? If so, where does one typically find a decent unit.
- How is the level matching done, music or test tones?

Some basic information will be appreciated to get to grips with what I'm about to do and the relevance of all parameters here.

Thanks
