PS3 issues

My new PS3 wont play in 3D Format "Underworld Awakening". I did the software upgrade but still only plays 2D ,Also the unit wont read a USB .When i insert the USB the PS3 doesnt pick it up.Only when the i switch off and resart the PS3 it sees the USB but no information.
Some assistance please.Is the unit faulty?
