I've been toying with the idea to build my own speakers.  Since I had the drivers I thought why not play a bit. :).
I know that a 2 way bookshelf is more mainstream/easier to build but I was really curious to learn what a soft-dome mid range sounds like and so I've set out and build the following.

Excluded from the list of drivers are 2 pairs of HiVi M8a.  I got this set in an attempt to build a 4 way active system.
Realizing that I still have a lot to learn this will have to wait for a while :cleansound:.

I see that this set of drivers have been around the forum for a while, so Shonver, Chingy and Oom Schalk (if I missed someone, sorry) here they are :2thumbs:.

Drivers
HF Driver: Unknown, Looks like a Aluminum Dome Tweeter. :nfi:
MF Driver: HiVi DMN-A, 2" Soft Dome Fabric Midrange.
LF Driver: HiVi M5a, 5" Base Driver.

Crossover: Kemo M016, 6db/octave 3 way crossover 800hz and 5kHz.  El cheapo bought from Communica.

My initial cabinet design was a bit complex and required some CNC cutting so I decided to build a simpler cabinet that would simulate the volume, layout and reflex port as and initial test.

Quick test, sound and electronic.  I was somewhat disappointed with the base response at this point.
Obviously just clamping the sides and no reflex port did not help at all.  Ah well so we learn.

In summary:

They will be mainly used for near field listing.

I really enjoyed building this.  Took a bit longer than what I planned.
I really need to work on cutting circles :Ooooooh:
I would like to build a better crossover but will need some assistance/learn a bit first.
I would also like to heard the effect of more/less dampening material in the cabinet.
I feel that they could do better with a bigger/wider reflex port.

So how do they sound?

I've only just started listing, running of a little 10wpc amp.  Kids are sleeping now and I want to try the IDA-8 on them.  At this moment my only reliable comparison would be against a pair of Mordaunt Short MS10i.  They extend a bit lower, which is what I was looking for.  They do sound a bit forward but I assume its because the Mid and Tweeter have higher Sensitivity than the Base Driver.  Imaging is on par I would say with the MS10i, which I think is good, but with a bit wider sound stage.  Thanks CAD for explaining this to me :mates:.
