NAD 3020 series 20 amp
« on: March 12, 2018, 01:04:58 PM »
I recently managed to "salvage" my dad's 1980's NAD component system. The set consists of a 3020 series 20 amp, 6150c tape deck, 4020 tuner and a NAD turntable (of which I need to confirm the model number).

I need to have all the components serviced and I also need to find a set of speakers that will run nicely with the set up.  He used to have AR18's in the set, but those are not with us anymore.  What speakers would you recommend I pair up with this system (old or new).  I am still learning, so not completely sure.

There is a set of PSB Image T5 floorstanders available on the forum that I am considering, but I am not sure if it is a good match (power wise).

Any advise will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

If you generally listen at reasonable levels then any good speaker pair of average sensitivity (> 88dB ave) will do nicely , including the PSB Image T5........

Welcome
This is exactly my first system, Ar18's as well, but started with a Dual (?505) tt.  Don't know if you play vinyl, but probably not casettes?  I also have a 3020 (and Nad Cd player) that needs to be serviced, maybe we could combine this (your 3020) to Nilam in Jhb?

Thank you for the welcome vinyljan.

I do listen to vinyl yes.  At the moment I am running my Edwards Audio TT & phono stage through a stupid Panasonic hifi, so the purpose of reviving the NAD kit is mainly for vinyl and CD (I still need to add a CD player though).

I will send you a PM.

Thanks!

Have a NAD CD player for you, must have it serviced though :giggle:.  Does the tt have a round or flat tonearm .

That will be fantastic! The TT is the NAD 5080A.

If the 5080A works, don't tamper with it, because the auto mech of the arm either works or not and if not there is nothing you can do. There is a brilliant tech called Johan 083 753 2900, who has been working on NAD in SA since day 1. Give the 3020 Series 2o a service - idle current, dc off set adjustment etc and yes it can be used on the PSBs as long as you leave the soft clipping off and do not turn volume up to point where amp clips. We drove the original Quad ESLs with a 3020. I still have one and it is NOT for sale. Enjoy!

You are lucky to salvage that setup.
I've got a 3020 series 20, 4020A, 6150C, 5120 and a pair of AR17's as my office/workshop system.
It runs daily for hours on end when I'm home and is dead reliable. The only issue I have is a "lazy " motor in the cassette deck which gets hot and slows after a few minutes. I hope there are still spares out there to keep it going.

Enjoy your setup

I can attest to Johan's expertise: he serviced my Marantz after some no-account hackers had it in their hands and it was making sweet music again.
