There's a Quad 33/303 on my Doorstop
« on: November 18, 2012, 01:15:55 PM »
A customer brought a set of 33/303 Quad gear here for some work, together with his FM 3 tuner.

I checked the equipment which seems OK without any undue crackles and pops although one can at a later stage replace wonky components should these be out of spec.

The customer's main request was that I 'rig' his gear to enable him to use his ipod as a main source.

I know nothing about ipods and fancy phones which appear to have facilities for a 3.5mm? stereo jack.

The 33 pre-amp has only din input sockets as you know.

Is this idea (to use his ipod as a source), feasible and which input should be used, if an interconnect can be made up with a din plug at one end and a 3.5mm stereo jack at the other?

The customer has some Kef floorstanding speakers, I'm told.

Thanks

I have plenty of Din to Rca cables, so it should be easy enough to make a Din to 3.5mm plug.

I don't know much about Ipods and such, there is probably a better connection method using some kind of dock.

Went down this road and the ipod is not a good source, the built-in dac is crap, even if you use the best lossless files, etc..

...but if he really want to go that route there 2 options without using a dac , using a ipod dock which is more elegant with remote or direct connection to ipod 3.5mm

I think the ipod dock is 2 volt and direct ipod connection is 0,8volt lineout but could be mistaken

I bought a cable at zak speed - 3.5mm to rca

You can use the "radio" or "Tape" inputs. The "Disc" input can also be converted to a line input (if I remember correctly) by pulling the card from its slot at the back of the 33 and re-inserting it in a different orientation.
The 33's inputs are made for lower levels than modern equipment so he'll have to use some attenuators if the iPod puts out CD level (2V). (Unless of course one can control the iPod's line output level from the iPod itself?)

iPod's have quite a low output anyways... Should be fine.

Thanks Jacques 8)

I don't really want to get involved and I think I'll send him a link with the options/solutions offered in this thread. Better still, get him to join AVFSA.

you can get docks which have a built in dac. they extract the digital via the port at the bottom of the ipod & they are apparently significantly better sounding than just using the audio out.

they also have remote controls. can't remember if they have displays with song title etc.

Hey Mafioso,

I'm currently running an iPod / laptop into the radio input on the 33. I got hold of an old DIN to RCA adapter, and bought a 5m 3'5mm to RCA lead.
It was the easiest solution for me, as those DIN plugs are a bit beyond my level of expertise.
Obviously the iPod doesn't do the 33/303 justice, but it's nice nonetheless.

Thanks, Christopher.

The Quads are ready to run and I'll try the recommendation today.

Didn't realise this is an issue? I'm a techno-idiot, but carry an earphone to RCA as well as earphone to stereo lead and can play most places through the aux input. Did so on my old Onkyo, no problem. But now jaco has added a good quality earphone lead so I simply plug in my PC or Pod and play
