Was at a friend's place a few evenings back and whilst chatting over a drink he remembered that his personal assistant was near tears because she couldn't access some of the documents she'd been working on - they all looked foreign and she thought she'd somehow changed character set or something along those lines.  I took a quick look at a folder or two and found the following files in virtually all document folders:

HELP_DECRYPT.HTML
HELP_DECRYPT.PNG
HELP_DECRYPT.TXT
HELP_DECRYPT.URL

Upshot:  His PA's PC had become infected with a recent variant of the CryptoLocker virus.  Every single document, spreadsheet, image, video etc. has been encrypted and a ransom demanded in exchange for decrypting the files.  I'm going to attempt to recover earlier versions of the files using Shadow Explorer (assuming shadow volumes wasn't turned off by the virus), failing which he's lost around 3 years of operational business data - stuff he relies on every day in running his business.

Here's the contents of the first 3 files listed above:
What happened to your files ?
All of your files were protected by a strong encryption with RSA-2048 using CryptoWall 3.0.
More information about the encryption keys using RSA-2048 can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSA_(cryptosystem)

What does this mean ?
This means that the structure and data within your files have been irrevocably changed, you will not be able to work with them, read them or see them,
it is the same thing as losing them forever, but with our help, you can restore them.

How did this happen ?
Especially for you, on our server was generated the secret key pair RSA-2048 - public and private.
All your files were encrypted with the public key, which has been transferred to your computer via the Internet.
Decrypting of your files is only possible with the help of the private key and decrypt program, which is on our secret server.

What do I do ?
Alas, if you do not take the necessary measures for the specified time then the conditions for obtaining the private key will be changed.
If you really value your data, then we suggest you do not waste valuable time searching for other solutions because they do not exist.

Moral of the story: If you insist on running stupid shit insecure operating systems make damned sure you have bloody good AV software installed, implement a good incremental backup strategy and pay attention to what's being backed up....if you see too many files hit the incremental backup list for no known reason chances are you've been hit.  Freeze your backup cycle, sort out your PC and restore the last known good backup.

Scary, scary shit.  Really pleased I run Linux.
