I want to connect my electronic drums to my laptop so that I can trigger some VST software like EZDrummer or Addictive drummer and then output that to my headphones.
I have read that latency becomes a problem, obivously with drums this not good.
I can get a normal USB to midi interface quite easily for R500, but then I would have to connect my headphones to the laptop's soundcard, which is where I suspect most of the latency will come in.
Any suggestions for an external sound card type device that will have both a midi connection and outputs to headphone or amp etc. all at low latency. My laptop has a firewire port if that helps.
Otherwise I would need both the USB midi interface as well as an external soundcard.
I am not looking to record or anything fancy, just play for fun with more realistic sound than my electronic drums' built-in module delivers. So don't want to spend too much money, preferably less than R1500.
