Cleaning an aluminium/stainless steel turntable platter

The aluminium or is it stainless steel platter of my Micro Seiki turntable needs cleaning due to a build up of belt residue etc.What is the best way to clean it without ruining the shine.I do have a magic erasure but it could dull the shine.Any other suggestions would be welcome.Please note my wife has to go buy the product so nothing to complicated would be an advantage.
