Baffled by open baffle

For a while now, I've been thinking about building a pair of Big Betsy's. For the uninitiated, they look something like this:

The pic above is an 8-inch driver, but I heard a pair at @seanjammy 's place with 15 inch drivers. I have twelve inch drivers that I'm thinking of using.

Apparently the "Edge" software if good for modelling OB, so I downloaded that and started playing around with it. As you can see in the picture, the driver is placed only slightly higher than the middle on the vertical axis. When I model that, the following is modelled:

The is a 4,5 DB drop from 500hz - 1300hz. Surely that is a problem?!

If I move the driver right to the top, the result is much flatter:

So why is this an issue, and which approach should be followed? I think probably part of the key here is that the software is very rudimentary - doesn't take T/S parameters, only drivers shape and size. Maybe that's the reason. Perhaps I should prototype and measure, but I still think that's what modelling software is for.

Any pointers?
