I spent a few hours in CHris Templar's listening room today -what an incredible experience! He has built a system with no compromises at all, his own vision of what makes good sound, no expense spared!
Firstly, a pair of double Tannoy Monitor Gold 15s in custom Autograph cabinets (with Chis himself). CUte, but not tiny. Those are 15 inch drivers - the perspective makes them seem smaller. Note the Goodman Axioms - he played these and they sound brilliant, they just don't have the presence and authority of the Tannoys
Then, three bespoke Dr Singh ribbon mid- to high frequency units (the top one is a super tweeter) with cobalt magnets, probably weigh about 15Kg each. Each has a different frequency range. All the loudspeakers are in parallel with a couple of capacitors to limit the frequencies, resistance very low
Then a pair of Alan Hobkirk power amplifiers. With zebrano and ebony , nogal
An EMT 948 turntable
In the distance, a Jolida CD player, a TACT amplifier, a Squeezebox and a Behringer used for it's Wolfson DAC
The subwoofer is in the romm next door, with only the opening into the listening room. There is a reason for this. It is 6 metres long, 70cm in cross-section. IIRC, it is tuned to 8Hz. Here is the business end - 18 inch woofers:
Here's the rest of it. The 175 tweeters are for a to-be-built line array
A lovely Akai M9 (Chris played me some recordings he has done with it over the years - excellent!)
And to cap it all, recording equipment to die for - a 24 track 2 inch Otari
AND! An original Ampex 300!
He played me Mercury , Decca and Philips vinyl recordings from the 50s and 60s, ripped FLacs, original SABC tape recordings, and CDs
How was the sound? You have no idea.
