To soundbar, or not to soundbar? That is the question.

Thanks for the offer, Morgan Irwin. At this point, I'm just considering it as an option, but I will keep your offer in mind should I end up going this way. I'll search the forum for the other discussions on this topic. Was also hoping that someone here has heard the new JBL 5.1.

To soundbar, or not to soundbar? That is the question.

Due to space constraints, I'm considering downgrading from my current floorstanders+subwoofer to a soundbar. I had a listen to the (old) JBL 5.1 system late last year - the one with the detachable side gizmos. It sounded okay-ish. Bass was there, mids not so much, and lots of tsss tsss. I...

    Classic\Vintage or just old

Thanks for the feedback folks, I'll definitely hang on to it. It is a pretty piece of kit, hey?! :) I'll dust it off and hook it up again when I get the space and a nice set of bookshelves :)

Dealing with an amp without low/high pass filters

Greetings, My sub has speaker level outputs that let you connect stereo speakers and then do the filtering using the sub's built-in cross over ... I've never tried it myself, but as far as I know that is exactly what its used for? Also, not sure how the purists would feel about this solution...

    Classic\Vintage or just old

Hello again :) I have had one of these (Teac AS-M50) since I was a teen back in the 90s. http://classic-hifi.net/product/teac-model-as-m50-4/. I didn't have much appreciation for it back then, but I found it stashed in my father's storage last night and got to thinking about it. As far as...

Mismatching floorstanders and centre - good idea\bad idea

I hear you, 3k not a mountain of cash, but in comparison to what I spent on the rest of my setup it just seems a bit ... out of proportion. That's close to what I paid for my floorstanders. My logic may be flawed here ... ?? I should have just snatched up the centre at the same time. All the...

Mismatching floorstanders and centre - good idea\bad idea

Thanks for the feedback, gents. That's pretty much what I was hoping to hear. @RobertChicken ... yup, that's the matching centre for my setup. But, unfortunately, I don't have the matching 3k for a new unit at the moment (seems my xmas bonus got lost in the mail). So I'm thinking about...

Mismatching floorstanders and centre - good idea\bad idea

Greetings folks, Quick question ... I currently have Mission MX3 floorstanders hooked up to an entry level pioneer receiver, and I use it exclusively for movies. I'm thinking about adding a centre speaker into the mix, but finding a matching unit is proving rather difficult. So my question...

    Sub troubleshooting

Bringing this one back from the dead. I took the sub to the agents. They were unable to diagnose and repair, so I ended up having the entire plate amp replaced (at more than half the cost of what I paid for the sub a few years back) I now have the old plate amp sitting in my cupboard. I'm...

    ps4 and avr not friends

Greetings, So just got a ps4 ... Happy days. Connect it to the TV via HDMI and no problems... All systems go! Then connected to my avr (pioneer vsx 321) yesterday and it worked perfectly for 15 mins. Then picture switched off mid game, but sound continued. Unplugged and connected back to TV ...

    Sub troubleshooting

Yeah, I also think the sub is faulty  I had the phone volume at 100%. Sub gain at 50%, its audible at my listening position, but just barely. Increasing the gain does increase the volume. But I can probably turn the sub gain right up to 100% without bothering the neighbours in my complex ...

    Sub troubleshooting

Good morning folks, So I just hooked my sub up straight to my phone. Phone volume full, amp gain full ... it plays but sounds a bit muted. Expected it to be a bit louder, specially since I had the volume right up on both sides. But then again I've never hooked a working sub straight to a phone...

    Sub troubleshooting

Thanks for the replies folks. I tried two cables, so I'm pretty sure its not that. Although I can't rule it out since they've also been in storage for 4 years. Tried to connect the sub directly to my tv but didn't hear anything ... maybe Generations wasn't the best source material... :| Will...

    Best Sounding Blu-ray Movie

Quite enjoyed the sound of the Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Good balance between the vocals and rest of the effects. Probably one of the better sounding movies i've seen, or is it heard, so far... :)

    Velodyne Impact 12

I also have the Impact 12. Use it 95% for movies, and its awesome. But then again, its my first sub, so I can't really compare to anything else.
