What a brilliant (musical) day I had yesterday. Went to the Linder in Joburg where Richard Cock directed the Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein. It was simply brilliant. Bernstein was just a genius. There is a recording on YouTube where Bernstein himself conducts this piece (see below).

The first 4 min is Psalm 108 which some may find a bit taxing. Then Psalm 23 (The Lord is my Shepherd) sung by a boy treble (soprano) up to 10 min, a really difficult but hauntingly beautiful area. Try at least this bit. I have had recordings of this for as long as I can remember but never saw it performed live. Take out the big HiFi and turn it up a bit, sit back and enjoy.

The second link is Bernstein giving a 5-minute lecture on the development of music through the centuries, quite enlightening.
