Rega Planar 3 with RB300 arm find.
« on: May 07, 2018, 10:27:38 AM »
So over the weekend I founded a Rega Planar 3 for a real real good price.  :Whoohoo: I usually frequently pop in by a local Cash Converters around the corner of us, and behold, there is Rega Planar 3 with RB300 arm, and for the price, I couldn't leave it there. Switch it on and it works. Sad part, the cartridge is missing it's needle / elliptical. Seems to me some small hands got hold of it. Tint Lid got some marks on them but I will sort it out and the plinth and tone arm just needs a nice cleaning.

Still need to remove the cartridge to see what model it is. Don't think it's a RB78 because this one is grey.

The cart is an old Elys.
Nice find.  You can’t replace the stylus but rega lets you trade the cart on a new one.

However, it all depends on budget.

I would recommend a new belt and cleaning the sub platter and pulley drive surfaces.  Check bearing isn’t dry.
Belts I have in stock.
Motor circuit caps and all that too.

And a myriad of cart options.

Thanks G. Will check everything and clean it up nicely.  :2thumbs:

Some Questions on your answers:
Do I need to contact Rega to find out how to trade in the cart or can I use the local Rega agent this side?
What sort of oil do the guys use on the bearing if it's dry and what is the estimated price on a new belt?

About Elys stylus coming unglued and generally about Elys/Elys2 sound quality:

So last night I did a bit of clean up on it. Bearing still looks great and there is still oil on the shaft. Motor and circuit caps looks good. Will sand down the lid this weekend and polish it.

Starting to think to get a Carbon Cart for this one. I'm running a AT95e on my Pioneer so think a Carbon Cart will be nice on the RB300. Will ask Achim when is back in the country.

Current bid here at 200Euro.

If it was not for the fact that this Pioneer PL300 I am using now is sounding so sweet. I would have upped that bid. ;D

So after missing that Ortofon Reg on Scotty's Sale last week, my luck strike my big on Friday. Found a brand new Grado cartridge for a give away price. Installed/aligned it today and adjust the weight to 2.51g. Now to run it in.
