Bought yet another vintage amp
« on: March 12, 2018, 08:36:06 PM »
As i have far to few amplifiers, something my wife allso knows, i bought another one today, delivered by an old friend from Stockholm who was driving past Kungsbacka on his way to buy a pair of JBL L-300.

The amp i put in the workshop for a thorough check out before listening so no pictures of the individual now, but what i bought was one of those:

Regarded as the best of Jim Bongiornos GAS amps this will be fun to restore and use, have listened to this amp before but never owned one,  speced as a 80W/channel into 8 ohms, lets say Bongiornos watts are large, very large, and good sounding too.

I had a Grandson a few decades ago. 60 (iirc) decent size watts. Beautiful sound.

I  have a Grandson too, used together with a Thalia and a Pink Triangle TT and a pair of H.A.D Jake speakers in the guestroom set up, actually very fun to listen to.

I drove the mid/tweet half of Tympani IIIB with Grandson because it sounded more pleasant than Yamaha RXV2902, 100wpc or there about. But, Yamaha drove the bass panels beautifully. Audio Control Richter Scale electronic crossover was splitting the signal between the amps.

The Thaedra was the top of their line, magical riaa, both MC and MM, separate circuit boards so signal from cartridge switched  on line level, not input.

The other two preamps from GAS was Thalia, cheapest model but still very good today, have one, Thoebe, in between model very highly regarded but i have not owned or heard, will check with Brittmarie (wife) if i need one of those too.

Driving Magneplanar MGllla with two vintage amps speced as 40W/channel tells a bit about how good Jim Bongiornos GAS products were/still are.

ust remembered. Its the Thalia. :-[

As i see it that is something that should produce a happy face, needs regular, very simple, service to do its best, all switches and potentiometers are open to the environmental efects in that pre.

Depending on local RH, up here a mean of 75% i guess, once every 3:rd mont lift cover and spray all switches and pot´s with PRF 7-78 contact cleaning spray, this should be done while the preamp is powered up and the  sprayed switch/pot is excersised while spraying.

If You use a conducting cleaning spray, do that with preamp switched off!!

So, the new preamp arrived, after a coupple of hours of warmup i started listening.

This is one good preamp, the old rumour of having one of the best RIAA stages ever made is no exaggeration, perhaps an understatement.

As You can see i very skillfully designed the between shelf distance optimaly for the Thaedra long ago.
