open the box, take out the drive, partition and format it like any other.

My brother in law has done this a few times...  everytime a client asks him to "dump" a broken decoder for them  ;D

He buys the empty conversion box-thingamajigs from the pc store... and then as above... format etc etc...

Here is a thought, can one swap out the HDD in a Explora 2A (2.5"HDD) with a SSD?
Would one just "Clone" the drive?
The new explora is very noisy.

Not as easy as that.  If you mount the drive in a Linux box, there are 3 partitions

So how do I get a SSD installed? Please be so kind as to elaborate.

I have two Exploras and can't hear them at all. Is it HDD or fan noise you are hearing?

It is easy to replace HDD, but a SSD of same capacity will cost more than your Explora, and the little "void when removed" stickers to open case will not allow you to return when it packs up.

Ok, agreed, lets say I have insurance, and already have a spare SSD looking for a home.
Now, can a simple Clone HDD work?
