For all interested in building these, I found software for a PIC18f458 to controll the PGA2311, it has very nice remote controll routines, but is written in some basic-type code which is not very efficient...
On the matter of displays, vacuum flouescent versus liquid crystal:
VFD = about R700 for a cheapie
LCD = about R60 for a backlit version.
The difference is, you can read the VFD while sitting in your armchair!
Mantech might be able to get them through farnell, RS stock them.
