Quad II - Worth Looking At?
« on: April 05, 2012, 11:18:32 AM »
Hi Guys

I've found Quad II amps and a controller, but apparently the valves need to be replaced

Any idea of the costs of replacement valves, and if it's worth buying the amp and replacing them?

Thanks!

Raees

Dear Raees,

A Quad II is a good sounding amplifier. First try it out with its current compliment of valves. I have seen a lot of vintage QII's where the valves were still usable. This may also be applicable for its preamplifier (controller). Like all vintage sets one must check and clean its sockets/ connectors. Valves are available from Mr Valve. Nowadays QII's are highly collectable valve amplifiers.

Kind Regards

Charles is a modest expert at valve restoration. He would be one to speak to.

Alternatively, "Ampdog" on the forum also restores QUAD IIs.

Ouch   :headbanger:  :'(

In general and while on the subject, Charles omitted to add that one must be careful of unrefurbished control units (if the Quad 22). They will sound poor; for some uncanny reason 12 of the capacitors used in the tone control circuits went totally out of value - up to two-fold, in all the many units I refurbished. (They were not poor capacitors in their time.) This unfortunately reflects on the design according to urban legend. There is nothing the matter with the design; it still is a top control unit when fitted with the proper components.

In reply to you question on cost, it might be necessary to replace the power valves and rectifiers if used a lot. At present that would amount to R1350 (from Mr Valve as mentioned by Charles). As said, it is unlikely that the smaller valves (main and pre-amp) would need replacement. If necessary they would amount to a further R1350.

Hope you get another chance! As Charles said: Highly collectable!
