Why chunk corner traps?

Cant quite get my head around the logic of using chunk traps in corners

At the corner or wall , the pressure is high , but air velocity is 0. The way the rockwool stuff works is to offer resistance to air velocity and convert that to heat , thus absorbing the sound.  One needs an air gap into the corner to use this property which triangular or square traps pushed into the corner wont allow. Surely a sheet  of absorption material put  across the corner is cheaper , easier to construct and more effective....
