What to use for DIY sound deadening in cars?

Seen guys discussing this before and they mentioned using bitumen roof sheets?
How much does that cost relative to the professional sound deadening sheets?
I need to deaden the inside skin of a car door and behind the door pad.

And if anyone has any tips to offer regarding sound deadening in cars I'd welcome some advice.
