Speakers with silver dust caps

Why were speakers with silver dust caps used and then discontinued? They had very little cone movement and not much for bass but the reduced cone movement helped produce a decent believable vocal band with minimal distortion. Pioneer used to use them on their midi hifi's, Panasonic, Kenwood, JVC. Largest I've seen was an 8" driver.

Back in school I sorta built a 2 channel HT with those and an old Telefunken 5 watt amp. Thought it was good for boosting tv speakers to an audible level without pressurizing the room.
