I am in the process of building a stereo microscope- using a camera lense and verkyker (binoculars), nogal!

At the flea market I spotted a contraption that could serve as a focussing mechanism: It has what looks like a receptacle for a camera on one end and a lense on the other end. This is joined by a concertina "channel". The two ends can be moved closer and farther apart by means of a precision telescoping mechanism.

I found that the lense receptacle is a smaller size than suits my two lenses, so I can't fit them. I don't have an SLR camera, so I don't know if the camera end is a standard fitting.

Now I was wondering if you photographic fundis could tell me:

(1) What is this contraption (it also had mounted to it a custom holder with a translucent plastic end plate and a receptacle for what may be slides)?
(2) How many standard interface fittings are there for optics?
(3) Are lenses for the smaller fitting readily available?

I hope my description makes sense!
