Unfortunately I cannot play ALAC files back through my main set-up without a bit of an effort. I will be hesitant to discard it entirely, but what I wrote earlier was a rather convincing impression the last time I listened to it. Less so with FLAC vs other uncompressed formats. The so-called harshness of FLAC that I referred to earlier may be due to my Cambridge's DAC and the fact that I am obliged to use HDMI with my media player. Also, my disc spinner's DAC sounds far better so that in itself may be influencing my perception. I have recently managed to fine-tune my DSP settings (cross-over frequencies, sub levels, etc) to closely match the audio fidelity of my disc spinner's DAC, so I am quite happy to listen to FLAC now. I am still not convinced about ripping CD's directly with dBPoweramp into FLAC, but maybe that will change when I get the latest, fully registered version (I have been using the trial version to date) and get rid of all the other, or older (and potentially conflicting) codecs (as PaganMcLoud suggested)..? I am a bit in the dark about that particular aspect. So Larry, I suggest you find what sounds best to your own ears i.t.o. all the potential variables.
