Cars with Dipsticks. When to check the oil Hot or Cold Engine ?

Per the topic, any tips as to whether one should check the oil when the engine is hot or cold. I would think cold is better as by then all the oil has drained into the sump.

Modern engines don't take kindly to overfilling and the manual explicitly states NOT to overfill but keep it between the Min and Max.
