When I first changed I honestly did not expect to hear any difference considering I was still using a digital connection. In my mind it should have sounded the exact same as nothing was interfering with the audio before it reaches my AVR. Not bit perfect playback, using just plain Windows 10 and a general media player. I do not think it would be Windows audio volume mixer as my PC installation has not changed nor has the settings. Only difference was which HDMI / graphics I was using. However it would make sense if the drivers have to process how it deals with the signal - I am not sure how the HW acceleration might affect the sound though? If I were to use something like the WASAPI plugin in Foobar2000 for bitperfect audio - do you think it would end up sounding the same via my motherboards HDMI and my Nvidia HDMI outputs? I have heard that there is differences in jitter between various HDMI audio output devices - although do not think this is what I am experiencing as I do not think jitter would cause such a difference? So I received my replacement PSU today (got a free upgrade, w00t!) so back to using my Nvidia graphics card now.
