My question is always: who decide what energy is going to cost? NERSA will not allow any energy source to become cheaper or more expensive than the others. How often, during winter times you hear about gas and/or cylinder shortages? How early in the morning is your battery charged? After that, your pv system just idles while supplying your base load. What about installing a 2kw element in your geyser and add a panel or two to your system and later a extra battery? To prevent a overload you can use a load control relay on the geyser supply. A heat pump is also a nice idea but its expensive and takes some maintenance. I love my solar geyser, but it was installed before I got a pv system. If I have to do it over I'll stay on electrical geyser and just go bigger on the pv system. NB you gas geyser must be in spec to work with a shower but I think the more technological advanced models might be less finicky.
