The amp I have is rated at 250 / 8 ohm ( clipping 300w ) and 500 / 4ohm . Speaker I am considering ( 4 ohm nominal )  is suitable for amps "up to 300W" - so will I be overdriving it if content is typical music clipping 5 % of the time? Peter

I cannot seem to find what the industry consensus is for 4 ohm speaker power ratings . If a speaker has a nominal impedance of 4 ohm and recommended amplifier say is 200w rms does that refer to a 200w /8 ohm amplifier or a 200w/ 4 ohm amplifier ( which usually is equivalent to a 100w / 8 ohm...

Lip syncing problems will occur when using separate audio / video paths due to different processing times to process the relevant data in theory - now what sort of numbers I don't know. If less than a few milliseconds I doubt you will notice but some of the modern avrs can delay signals for...
