    FLLA from Telkom

Has anyone else here been forced to go to a wireless home phone? Telkom calls it Fixed Line Lookalike. Any problems? I had two wired phones and now both have to go wireless. Had to make some calls to Telkom because there's delays getting my SIMs and the desktop phones. I got the SIM for the one...

Going to try and build a Non-oversampling DAC

I'm planning to build a non-oversampling DAC with SPDIF interface. I'm going to need some glue logic, but it could be fun. Bought these babies on eBay. I've only seen more gold on my mother-in-law.

    Optical Pickup Cartridge

source ds-audio https://www.ds-audio-w.biz/optical-cartridge-basicprinciple/ I'm curious how it would sound. It would produce a more substantial output signal requiring less amplification, but it seems a bit gimmicky. Comments? Anybody here got a Japanese laser turntable?

You can now buy video encoded vinyl records

seriously, Video from a vinyl record. How cool is that! https://thevinylfactory.com/news/supersense-video-encoded-vinyl-records/ I've had some success recording 30 or 60 line video to ordinary cassette tape, with sound. Vision on L and sound on R channel using so-called Narrow Band TV...

    MNET Audio

When NICAM audio for television was introduced in South-Africa most people thought it was the first time digital sound was available from a TV. However, MNET broadcast digital sound right from the beginning in 1986. The MNET decoder would extract the sound data from the area occupied by the sync...

Why are we still using Vinyl? (As apposed to more modern polymers)

I was wondering why we still use vinyl to make records. Surely there are modern plastics that are anti-static and scuff and scratch-resistant.

    Cleaning pins and sockets

How do you clean tube pins and sockets if they become a little corroded? I prefer to use the contact cleaner from Kontakt Chemie, but I understand MAF (Mass Airflow Meter) cleaner works well too since it is made for PCBs and don't leave a residue.

    Unusual tubes

These tubes don't use grids, but rods instead to control electron flow. I own a couple but have not had a chance to build something using them yet. They have directly heated cathodes. https://www.radiomuseum.org/forum/russian_subminiature_tubes.html?thread_id=200277 Copyright AJ Bredekamp 2019

The tube equivalent of an integrated circuit.

Check out the COMPACTRON, a tube containing multiple "tubes" in a single glass envelope. http://www.junkbox.com/electronics/CompactronTubesIndex.shtml These tubes are big and chunky and were intended for TV use and wave soldering onto a PCB. Then there is this vacuum tube ADC...

    12V tubes

Did you know that a series of 12V tubes were made for car use? The tubes are designed to not require HT but instead uses an acceleration grid to boost the electrons from cathode to anode. I built a headphone amp using such tubes. Check it out at on my website (URL shortened)...

How to spot if a CD was matered using U-Matic video tape

Hi friends, I recently pulled the PCM audio from my copy of The Visitors by ABBA, 1982 on Polydor into Audacity and made an interesting discovery. Do you see the very faint tone at about 16kHz? (right-click and select open image in new tab) Each track on the disc display this anomaly. A high...

    I feel torn

I feel torn. I listened to my first CD in 1987 when my brother bought a player. I was 11. I had a record player before then and my parents bought me afrikaans popular music and childrens records. I started buying my own CDs and cassettes from about 13 and it's been only CDs since about age 15...

    LP damage

Does lowering the needle onto a record gently using the lever damage the record at all? I'm asking because it seems to me that the needle could potentially ride on the land area between the grooves before dropping into the groove. I'm curious whether this causes any audible damage. Is it just...
