ET Gate Remotes (Blue Encypted) - where to get in the Table View area.

"secure code encrypted ET Blue remotes" - hahahahaha. Yeah, no, the Keeloq rolling code has been hacked for ages. There are 2 versions of keeloq, old and new. Hold down each key on the remote for +-20 seconds to switch modes. Fast flashing will be new, solid will be "old". Paper on issues...

    5kW Battey/8kW Inverter Advice Needed

@chrisc The 8kw sunsynk is a hybrid inverter. It can be used gid tied, or completely off grid.

    Samsung curved screen repairs

They can crack on their own. Lots of the rather expensive G9's randomly crack. But yeah, as above, panel cost is the 90% cost of the unit. Add in labour as noted, and not cost effective. I've done it in the past when living in China, as panels can be sourced easily, and relatively cheaply...

SA officially back under national state of disaster

I remember telling them go gtfo. I already had cob led, and they wanted to replace with mercury CCFL that got dumped here en masse as it was banned elsewhere, that really should never have been allowed to be sold.

Does anyone else keep suburban chickens?

Interestingly I've also been considering getting chickens. My neighbours ones are regularly in my yard. Semi-rural, and I have plenty of space. We do have caracals and baboons, but neighbours ones seem to survive.

    DAC Suggestions

The Audio-GD stuff is just too high priced for what it is imho.  Way way way out of budget for what I'm looking to spend.  I still have another month here before I come back, so I reckon the best thing is to test a couple out and see if I like a good ES9018 implementation, or I prefer the...

    DAC Suggestions

I do love the look of the Fostex, but only available here for about 5k RMB, so its stretching the budget a little past where I want to be. It also reviews worse than the others (well the ones they know about!) on head-fi.org, and has an older AK chipset than the Aune.

    DAC Suggestions

So, I'm looking for a decent DAC while I'm still in Shanghai. Been looking at the ESS9018 options, and the AK4495. Rand:RMB is 2:1 sigh :( Gustard X12 is reasonable at RMB2380, and reviews well. Next one up in their series is the Gustard X20U is 3700RMB (slightly discounted at the moment as it...

New Toy - Qinpu 琴谱 D1 Desktop Amp + S2 speakers

As I'm back in Shanghai again for work, did a bit of shopping for a *lightweight* tube amp that I can lug back to Cape Town. QinPu / 琴谱 ( http://www.chpo.cn ) makes a number of small sized desktop amps, so I did some research on those, then went to the local tube amp hifi store. I was initially...

Help setting up my home theater system & some other questions

Finally got the projector screen mounted! Took me 2 years+ but now its on the wall, and I have one less box cluttering up my bedroom. Its daytime, and the projector is pretty low lumens (Mitsubishi HC4000), but its definitely better than bare wall. Next up on the agenda, will be putting...

    Hisense any good?

For what its worth, Hisense is one of the premium Chinese brands. For tv's, there really isn't much inside - PSU (cheap 100rmb odd) A controller board (usually cheap - retail for most in China is about 40rmb-200rmb depending on what they do, 400-500rmb for android based) The LCD panel (most of...

affordable 4k for the masses not far away

I have a cheap 4K tv in the bedroom. Only a 39" though (the 55" was too heavy for luggage) Works fine, happy enough with it, although Plex still doesn't work properly with 4k. Cost me 2999RMB in Feb + a few hundred in customs fee's (carried back from Shanghai as luggage).  Landed was about...

VAT on foreign e-commerce from 1 June

http://www.ensafrica.com/news/VAT-registration-of-foreign-online-suppliers-not-limited-to-supplies-of-e-books?Id=1331 This does have other implications, some of which are unforeseen. The amendment has the effect that from 1 April 2014, all persons supplying electronic services from a place...

    Looking for large water container

IBC's are fine for fish, thats whats going in mine! If its just for a few hours, go buy a 50L plastic bucket container, and a small pump. Fish are fine in small containers, but you *do* need to make sure its aerated.  A small fish tank pump + air bubbler will be fine, and can be had for < R50...

    Looking for large water container

If you want large + cheap, look for IBC's on Gumtree eg http://www.gumtree.co.za/s-ibc/v1q0p1 They're standardised 1000L containers, usually used for shipping. I've retrofitted one for aquaponic use, and have another one for rainwater catchment. Some photos of the aquaponic setup here -...

    Apple TV any good?

I'll second the Roku over the ATV. I have 2 roku's in the house, and a 4k tv with android built in, I'm running Plex on. Roku + Netflix = DSTV minus the sports +-

Help setting up my home theater system & some other questions

I think i'm going to order the tweeters from China, as I have staff there that can order, and ship over to me. I got pricing locally, and its about double what I can land it for, so makes more sense. Haven't called about the sub repair yet, as I just bought myself a Mac Pro desktop (3rd in the...

    Logitech Harmony One woes

    http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.21.9fPSvm&id=38772215681 RMB450 for a s/hand one on taobao. RMB450 x 1.7 = R765.    Shipping @ 2KG about R400 = R1200+- plus landed duties (200-400 depending on courier used).  Landed price would be about R1500

    Custom fees, import duties etc

Depends who you ship with really. Airfreight wise - If you use Fedex (who are Supaswift locally) expect to be treated like you dropped the soap in the shower in a mens prison. Heres what I recently got quoted on a $89 part. I told them no way in heck I was paying that, as HS code meant 0%...
