Anyone got space for this? http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-27483035

Who makes the most unreliable cars?

Actual reliability figures based on warranty claims from warrantydirect.co.uk: http://www.reliabilityindex.com/ I've found this index very useful in buying used cars. The difference in reliability between models offered by single manufacturers can be huge, so it really helps to be able to get...

    DAC fighting with other software

I had similar issues with my ASUS Xonar. Eventually found that it introduced stuttering sounds when the Windows 7 performance management shifted processor speeds; after I changed the minimum processor speed to 100% in the power management it all worked fine. Obviously this fix increases your...

    Decent ADSL router

I bought a Netgear DGN2200 because it can act as a NAS for a USB drive (very useful), but I have to reboot it at least once a day and often more as it won't allow authentication after being on for too long. Never managed to work out why, but it's really put me off.

    Focal KR-165 book shelf build.

I like the finish. Why make DIY speakers that no-one can see are DIY?  ;)

    1Mbps a waste of time

speedtest.net is a good way to verify general line speed for local and international bandwidth. Depending on the router, you may be able to check SNR levels in the web-based router interface -- definitely something you should check. If your SNR is too low, some routers allow you to set a...

    Home ADSL

I obviously rent my phone line through Telkom; but I get rent my ADSL "line" through Axxess and my bandwidth from Openweb. Benefits of doing ADSL line and bandwidth through other providers is price and service. After spending hours on the Telkom support line to get them to reset my ADSL port...

Visiting Florence and Venice - best months

I've been in Florence & Rome in September and agree that it's a good time to go; the weather was nippy, but not unpleasant. Everything was open, but the crowds were (mostly) gone -- but even at that time expect long queues for the most popular attractions (eg. the queue to enter the Vatican...

    Audiophile review generator

http://boingboing.net/2012/12/06/audiophile.html Perhaps this will be useful for the guys who enjoy cable threads and editors of AV magazines?  ;)

    What's a buffer?

OK, that makes sense to me. Thanks for such a clear explanation. Anyone got a link to a good circuit? I don't have the skills to design one myself. If anyone's got some boards lying around that would be even better.

    What's a buffer?

I'm thinking of building an amp with the Hypex UCD3xMP http://www.hypex.nl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=107&Itemid=107. It incorporates a high quality class D amp with a switching power supply for only 70 Euro, but it looks like I'd still need to build a "buffer." (See...

Class D amplifiers from cold amp

Group build coming up? I've got one of their plate amps in a DIY sub and it works very well. I've been wanting to build a small Hypex stereo amp for a while now....

Is the hype about cat5 cable all true?

Avoid single (ie. non-braided) CAT-5 - cheap flex is way better! I tried braided CAT-5 and it was pretty good; but just be careful to check them with a multimeter before hooking them up as it's very easy to get one of the pairs in the wrong bunch and cause a short.
