I am busy trying to buy a cheap second hand car. R20000 to R25000

It is interesting how people try to advise you on what to purchase i.e.
Get Ford, Mazda, VW, Toyota, Opel as these cars spares are apparently cheaper and the spares are easier to obtain.
But I often hear little horror stories and wonder what the truth really is.
The main factors I do pick up is often the mechanics we take our vehicles to are the ones ripping us off, grey products are not always the best to use causing more expenditure in the long run.

What are other peoples experience here?
