Wanted: 15" or 12" woofer drivers
« on: February 10, 2018, 10:58:34 PM »
Looking for a pair of 15" woofers to use in open baffle project.
My second choice would be 12" drivers.
I am looking for decent quality inexpensive drivers.
I can courier from anywhere.
Please PM.

Hi Felix,

You can certainly try the hybrid 12h150 it works exceptionally well in open baffle.

Regards

Brian

Currently using 15H200s on open baffle and happy. Bought from BC Electronics in Parow, CPT, for R420 ea.

That's good news indeed ThomasH, since I literally just purchased the exact same drivers you mentioned.
Where are you crossing them and what are you using for mids and tweets?

Thanks again guys

What amp are you using to drive them?

I have the DIY naked amp https://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,57352.0.html which is basically 3 stereo amps. I will use a Pass B1 buffer to adjust the gain of the woofer independently.

I also have 3 Yamaha chip amps that I would like to try. The benefit with these, is that each amp has it's own individual volume control, so matching between the tweeters, mids and woofers should be easier. They are just not very powerful, but for low volume listening, which most of my listening consists of, it may just work. Will see...

Open baffle setup is a Leak Stereo 20 driving Isophon 10" mids and tweeters are from an old pair of AR-8s that were seeing no use in garage. Have tried other tweeters but the AR-8s just sound right to my ears. Tweeters are simply AC coupled with a capacitor (ie no "real" cross-over as such). I am currently using just the amplifier portion from a Paradigm PDR10 subwoofer, which unbolts from the sub enclosure quite nicely. Entire amp is nicely mounted on it's own plate with heatsink and all.  The Paradigm amp has high-level speaker inputs so I couple from the speaker output of the Leak to the high-level input of the sub amp. Sub amp has individual level and low frequency cutoff settings. Currently cutting off at around about 100Hz if I recall correctly. I was amazed at what I was hearing when I first hooked it all up! Enjoy!

That's quite a setup you have there  It must sound very good. I like how you integrated the plate amp with the 15" - makes a lot of  practical sense.

My 15" was delivered today. So impressed with the service I received from the vendor. Kudo's Brian.
