Lol, boats using the Thames river has to be licensed to do so, this is an artifact from the beginning of numbering boats so that drunken husbands returning from the pub wont accidentally enter the wrong boat
No batteries just 2 screws needed.

Dates between about 1866 and 1974 on the basis that they started licensing boat letters around 1866 after complaints of letting to people who could not navigate the waterways and the conservancy was wound into Thames Water in 1974.  This would have been fitted to the boat a bit like a licence disc.  Can't pin down age easily as presumably the boat letters were assigned a number and replaced discs as necessary or passed on their number.  Nice bit of memorabilia for someone with a boat though. GLWS

Twee ware feite, ek en jy sal nie dors word nie want ons is mos op jou kroeg en as ons in England op eindig waneer die vloed ophou dan is jou floating bar mos ok want ons het n boot lisensie, nogals nommer 71.  ;D
