Streaming/Networked DACs
« on: May 06, 2017, 07:37:21 PM »
I'm intrigued by devices like the Oppo Sonica DAC and Auralic Altair.
(No doubt there are many others that I'm not aware of.)

For streaming Tidal (or accessing a library via NAS) it cuts down on clutter in a big way, assuming the internal DACs are good of course.

Assuming they are, this means you no longer need a separate PC or rendering device.*
You don't need a co-ax, optical or USB cable, or USB audio bits like reclockers or power cleanup filter thingies.
Data goes in via Ethernet and music comes out via RCA/XLR.

Of course, implementation is everything.

And maybe this is just a step on the way to the full integration of products like the higher end NAD amps with BluOS/Tidal integration, the Moon Ace Neo, Auralic Polaris, etc.

Personally I prefer to keep the amplification separate.

But I do feel that, technically and practically speaking, it makes sense to integrate streaming and DAC functionality.

* The Altair does however offer Roon endpoint functionality, afaik.

If in the market for a networked DAC I'd make sure it was Roon Ready

That can be tricky.
The Auralic, for example, can function as a Roon Endpoint.
So still requires a separate Core to run somewhere else.
Afaik that means either a PC/NUC/Mac, high-end QNAP NAS or similar.
Or maybe something like the Elac Discovery?
Thing is, I'm trying to get away from computers with software updates and hardware configurations and complexity.
My ideal is a single box; Ethernet in, XLR out. iPad control. Roon nice to have but not essential.

Good solution.
Tidal support built in.
PCM1704-based DACs.
I'm sure it sounds great.
But like you said, $$$.

Maybe good networked DACs will come down in price over the next few years

Probably not ideal but perhaps consider a RPi3 with IQAudio DAC Pro, or oDroid with HIFI Shield 2.  Only "downside" i can see, well for me in any case, is you will need to control volume from a device as well unless your willing to play a bit with rotary encoders.  At the very least this will give you a very good idea of the route you want to follow. As for updates etc, it has really become very easy with these device.

Sounded good to me but did not get to try Tidal on it, but was keen to hear MQA.
I see  a comment from Roon here- https://community.roonlabs.com/t/will-the-cary-dms-500-be-roon-ready-at-some-point/22014/3
