Loadshedding power alternatives

Please share what you have in your home, or provide some direction please.

I'm trying to decide between a Generator and a Inverter/UPS type setup. Something just to last the 4 hours (and maybe a little more) that the lights go out for.

I see Game has a baby 750w Stramm generator on special this weekend for R1100. The only drawback for me is that it doesn't have a built in AVR.

I've read that a way around this is to put a UPS in between the generator and the appliances you hook up to it, to smooth the current deliver so that nothing gets damaged.

I'm also looking at perhaps investing a bit in the home, and doing a solar panel setup with batteries to store charge and run the lighting system off that. But that's a long term, maybe solution, not a right now solution.

I'm just looking to power a 51" Samsung Plasma, a DSTV Explora decoder, and perhaps a energy saver CFL lamp or 3 for the duration of load shedding.
