As for the optical... I once tested a cheap AR optical (R90) vs a cheap Audioquest Coax (R600) with my Pioneer DVD player. Both were connected at the same time, so I just switched between inputs on the amp. My expectation was that the coax will have a warmer sound suiting my general music (rock). But it was undeniably the other way around. The optical performed better for my musical tastes. I am planning to try out different speakers cables to see if I also find the difference in speaker cable. Currently I am using QED Silver Anniversary Biwire. I must just get my hands on another higher end pair and then I am going to use the cheap flex. Then also interconnects. Then I can at least "know" for myself if it makes a difference for me.
