Has anyone on this list been able to do first hand comparisons between hi-res PCM (24/96+) and 1-bit DSD versions of the same recording? Here on the southern tip and using a currency that renders so much equipment ridiculously unaffordable, it seems very hard even to come to an initial conclusion regarding the future direction of hi-res formats.  For example:

1. At times it seems, rather arbitrarily as if PCM is the preferred European format (Linn, Naim, Meridian, Devialet) and DSD the yank preference (Mytek, Auralic). But PCM and DSD have very vociferous defenders on both sides of the Atlantic.

2. Some highly reputable recording companies (such as Channel and 2L) are offering material in both formats though the DSD downloads are invariably more expensive.

3. I read that irrespective of the original recording format, editing is almost invariably done in PCM. This means that most DSD recordings have passed through PCM encoding some time in their lives, thus making it difficult to understand why the (re)conversion to DSD should improve things.

So is there someone out there who can use the benefit of their experience to confuse me further?
