Recordings made from about 1953 and issued on micro groove LP records were good. It took the advent of stereo in 1957 and decent stereo cartridges to change that to excellent. Quality improved until about 1983 until the advent of the Compact Disc. Then it went steadily downhill with more and more compression being added (Listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers) until about 2003. Then SACD was introduced and hi-res digitally recorded music became available The commercial recording industry is today under the control of companies who do deliberately do not compete with one another, to the detriment of creative music and small musicians. It?s all factory-produced music with singers who are chosen for their sex-appeal The market for classical and jazz is tiny and does not generate enough cash to support small labels. The only upside is that with the advent of easy to use computers and relatively good and inexpensive microphones, small groups do have a chance, but with a market share that is unable to grow
