When bathrooms were bathrooms before they became features. Mid morning and the last member of the family are done ,calm settles over the house and there are the smells of shaving cream and aftershave and soaps and oils and creams while the steam slowly condenses on the plastic shower curtain before dripping on the tiled floor Casualty units between 6 and 7 am on a Sunday morning. The last floormop have finally cleared the sour smell of booze laden vomit and the smell of fresh coffee is slowly winning against the metallic smell of masses of old blood that tends to gather at the back of the nose and somehow then settle on the tongue, silent evidence of Man's incredible cruelty towards Man. Any minute now the doors are going to swing open and the new shift in their crisp uniforms swing in,smelling of soap and that clean smell only a young nurse can emit. Diesel ,yes. Blue Ford tractors stuttering to life in tidy pre-dawn farmyards but also the clatter of air cooled Diesels being started, mixed with the deeper growl of Atlantis Diesels. Somewhere in that mix the faint smell of Kiwi boot polish and a whiff of gun oil. Even better, the explosive gust of avtur as the Puma's blades slowly pick up speed."We're outa here.we're going home! Cliick of a Tupperware container and the slightly putrid smell of egg-mayo sandwiches on neat white concrete tables under Pepper trees. Every so often a motor snarls by and in the distance twin 25 Condensers belching steam and smoke while thundering accross the Karroo plain with another load of consumer goods for the bustling 1970s Transvaal. . Before we knew there were places like Soweto and the unspeakable things being done to preserve our little Utopian bubble
