Listening to music is a very personal experience. I usually sit alone in my cave with a few sound tracks that is suited to my mood. Some has to be played in Stereo for full enjoyment, others may need some more channels. I experiment when my ocd takes over, especially on new tracks or genres. My experience is that BELLS AND WHISTLES do not make for a good listening experience. I have an old 80's era stereo system that still gives me goosebumps with suited music tracks. I sit and listen with my eyes closed and no distractons. An amazing experience! My Onkyo TX-RZ830 on the other hand outperforms my old system when it comes to watching AV like bluray concerts. Movies shine with lots of speakers, subs, bells and whistles. I have also experimented with all types of interconnects and speaker cable. The best I have heard is my home made triple screened 99% pure copper silver coated interconnects! My 80's system loves them. My Onkyo system runs on Audioquest Forest 48 HDMI and it works for me. Then again my JBL blueteeth Charge 4's rocks up a storm when I have a braai with friends! If it sounds good TO YOU it IS GOOD!
