Now it sounds like we might be getting somewhere. The way the heating works in the apartment is via a grid of hot water pipes running under the floor. Maybe it could be some mechanical action, the padding in the floor pressing against the pipes and our footfalls knocking the piping against his ceiling? Our apartment has two elevations and we only seem to bother him when walking around on the one. And yes, it has always been a problem although there was a brief respite after I spoke to him about rather using email to communicate any problems rather than the banging, but old habits die hard. But thanks for all the responses. I'm feeling more optimistic about the situation. If it is the piping, I think I'd be able to make the distinction from within his apartment. I'll try set up a meeting with him.
