I decided very early in my journey that I won't buy kit that makes my poorer recordings sound awful. It's a fundamental test when I try kit, that I also test it with old 80s stuff. If I still enjoy what I hear, good. If not, they can keep the kit. I don't have the technical language to explain why some equipment must deliver "sound quality" at the expense of joy, whilst others have the ability to somehow balance the compromises. But when I buy, I look for the latter, and I believe it exists. Yes, my system can distinguish good vs. bad vinyl pressings, and I choose to buy a vinyl pressing only if it represents a worthwhile sound quality upgrade. But as a rule, I'm not disappointed when I play my favourite tunes, regardless of format. You shouldn't have to be, either.
