For the benefit of future generations, I should probably mention that I was looking for stuff that was readily available in South Africa in late 2022. So, I think chrisc's recommendation is the "TP-LINK Bluetooth 4.0 Nano USB Adapter", available on takelot.co.za yesterday for R185, and today for R179 "Only 1 left". In that case, there's probably not much point in posting the link: https://www.takealot.com/tp-link-bluetooth-4-0-nano-usb-adapter/PLID69199534 ? Takelot also has more expensive devices which(like this one) mention the string "UB400" (perhaps Bluetooth 4.0) and also "UB500" (maybe 5.0?) Similar looking devices are listed on Amazon - but those mention in the Description that they are not compatible with Linux. I did notice that the UB500 one actually has a review claiming it was plug&play with a recent Ubuntu. Perhaps Linux has caught up. Of course "The manufacturer reserves the right to change specifications without notice", so it's still a bit of a gamble. I also got a recommendation for an Orico USB Bluetooth5.0 Adapter , also on Takelot https://www.takealot.com/orico-usb-bluetooth5-0-adapter/PLID73069397 It also has a review reporting linux plug&playability.
