A lot of ppl see their car as the visible yardstick of their position/achievement , modern new cars generally are just huge money pits (depreciation and financing costs)- the more expensive , the more you take a bath on em. Would kill me to buy a 500k beemer and take a 300k loss in 3 yrs Thats why I drive an old (86) vette and a newer (94) Camaro - both cars were under 130k and when and if I sell , I wont lose a cent - both distinctive , reliable and damn fast and combined price is under what new entry level car costs. Repair costs are cheap (tons of yank parts available) and if driven nicely , both can get almost 10l/100 , I really enjoy driving em too. As to kids , well material things don't spoil em - it's the parents that give the material stuff in lieu of their attention that are responsible.
