A fellow forumite brought me a vdH Carbon cable where one of the RCA plugs had come loose and was not transmitting a signal. Taking it apart showed a tiny (about 2mm) crimp attaching the remains of the very fine carbon thread to the centre pin. It took a while with a surgical steel pick to prise the crimp open. Out fell a short piece of the thread.

It proved impossible to re-attach this open crimp to a 1mm length of carbon sticking out the insulation. The thread or filament is very fragile and breaks if you look hard at it. Cutting away some insulation did not work as the thread immediately came apart

I thought to insert a 0.4mm silver wire some 10mm into the carbon, then soldering this to the centre pin

The DC resistance of the repaired cable is 7 ohms, the same as the undamaged length

Yet he tells me the sound signature is different
