My accent. Perhaps we have forgotten about the OP's original question. What improvement (to use a different word) will he get with a different pre-amplifier .... Not knowing too many of the contemporary pre-amps, but having seen a fair share of their schematics, and knowing the Quad 22 inside out, I cannot think of much of an improvement any modern pre-amp will give. Not talking about the super-facilitated stuff with bells, whistles, 30-button remote control, simplified remote control for the remote control, DACs, iPod airstrip and such. Apart from 'modern' pre-amps often bordering on the rediculously expensive for what you get, the Quad 22 has just about every hi-fi facility one will ever want. The components may have to be renewed, the circuit not (although I do add a little extra to the phono stage when I refurbish, for those with LP tastes). I have in the past steered even fairly affluent clients towards a Quad 22 to pair with my power amp designs. Do mind that I am speaking of refurbished models, including some simplifications. Some of the old capacitors in particular need to be replaced (drifted totally off-value).
