Old thread resurrection. I can remember when I was laaitie my dad had this monstrous(to me) Technics SU-V8 amp and I thought it was the coolest thing. He showed me the Proton amp he was planning on replacing it with, and I thought he was crazy, I mean, it's less than half the size of the Technics. He ended up buying an AM-455 Pro + the Schalk Havenga audiophile upgrade from HiFi Installations, and it sounded amazing. He's still got it, and it's still sounding great. A little bit after that I saved up all my pocket money for months until I had enough money for my first new amp - it was between the NAD 3020i and the AM452, for some reason I've ended up buying the flimsy NAD. Fast forward many years and I simply couldn't find an 455Pro for sale, and ended up with a 455. Not quite the same, but I still loved it and sounded much nicer than the Rotel RA970BX Mk2 it replaced. Maybe less refined, but a much more enjoyable listening experience. Then I've now replaced that with the AP400 Pro dual mono pre + AA461 Pro dual mono power amp combo and I'm over the moon!! So long story short, I guess I've grown up with Proton, and still love it.
