This was our thinking too when we made the decision to move. Our original plan was to also only go for a few years (in fact we still own our old SA house), but we fell in love with the European city lifestyle and can no longer imagine going back. There's a good chance we'll be moving to the Netherlands this year as well. If you end up with a choice, the Netherlands I think would fit in with your intention to get out there and see the world a bit better. Much bigger cultural shift and easy access to the rest of Europe. Same age as I was when we moved, wife was 27. I can say for us it fundamentally changed the way we look at ourselves and the world, we're very different people from the ones that set out all those years ago. If there's one bit of advice I can give, it's come with an open mind. The expats that complain it's hard to make friends and meet people are usually the ones not willing to sincerely engage with anything or anyone too different from what they're accustomed to.
