IPS (In Plane Switching) and VA (Vertical Alignment) are the two types of LCD panels TVs come equipped with. IPS is found on all LG LCDs since they manufacture them, but generally only on the lower end TVs from other manufacturers. The reason for this is though IPS allows for wider viewing angles, VA provides deeper blacks and therefore higher contrast - meaning better images overall. Panasonic was known primarily for their plasma tech, once that died they tried moving into the LCD space, but it was a case of too little too late. Once LG cracked production of their WRGB OLEDs, Panasonic was the first company outside of LG to use the panels, in exchange sharing their plasma acquired technical know how with LG (who up to that point were struggling with issues like vignetting on their OLEDs). OLED has now taken plasma's place as Panasonic's flagship TV product, the LCD side is an also-ran alternative.
